Work set to go aheadto reinstate gravestones
Harrogate Borough Council has informed town councillors that following a formal notice being issued in May 2008, work will now being on reinstating the headstones for 219 memorials listed as causing continued grounds maintenance problems.
Philip Andrew, bereavement services manager at Harrogate Borough Council, said: "We're keen to retain and preserve the cultural architectural characteristics of the cemetery as much as possible.
"Memorials and headstones are the responsibility "Anadrol 50" of the grave owner. If not maintained, they can become structurally unsafe and we have to take steps to alleviate any potential risk.
"Many memorials were inspected and had to be carefully laid down. If grave owners don't take responsibility to bring them back into good repair, we will be obliged to take the necessary steps."
Owners that can be traced for the headstones have been written to, and informed of theCouncil's actions, but many headstones don't have records because of their age.
Reinstatement works have already successfully taken place in Ripon, Pateley Bridge and Kirkby Malzeard and Knaresborough is next.
The options for the graves will be one of the following three:
l remove base and re erect the headstone by part burying it
l fit and lay the headstone flush into the ground surface so the inscription can be read
l remove or bury in the grave space any dilapidated headstone or component parts
Cemeteries across the district hit Primobolan En Zweten the headlines in the millenium year when thousands of gravestones were laid flat under new health and safety policy, which was introduced after six year old Reuben Powell died when a gravestone collapsed on him while he was playing in Grove Road Cemetery, Harrogate, in 2000.
If you're not sure whether you own a gravestone that could be affected, the complete list is available at the Town Clerk's office at Knaresborough House.
The work is expected to take some months to complete.
